This is a list of the Canadian royalty and income trusts that trade on the U.S. exchanges. Many more Canadian trusts trade only in Toronto and are not included here, since this site covers securities available on the American exchanges.
Canadian trusts differ from their U.S. counterparts in an important way: many hold operating businesses rather than a passive royalty interest in a fixed set of wells, so they can acquire assets and replace production rather than simply depleting.

Canada's income trust structure was hugely popular until the government announced in 2006 that trusts would be taxed at the entity level from 2011, removing the flow-through advantage. Most large Canadian trusts converted to ordinary corporations in response.
The survivors are a much smaller and more specialised group than the sector was at its peak. Any historical yield comparison spanning that period is comparing two different things.
Distributions to U.S. investors are generally subject to Canadian withholding tax, commonly 15% under the tax treaty. In a taxable account this is usually recoverable via the foreign tax credit; in an IRA it often is not, so the withholding is simply lost.
Distributions are also declared in Canadian dollars, so your income in U.S. dollars varies with the exchange rate even when the trust's payout is unchanged.
QuantumOnline has tracked exchange-traded income securities since 1997. Every security in this list is researched and maintained by hand from the issuer's prospectus and SEC filings, not scraped from a vendor feed. Where a figure is unavailable we show "n.a." rather than guessing.
Information is believed to be accurate but is not guaranteed, and nothing here is a recommendation to buy or sell. Always confirm terms against the issuer's prospectus before investing.
