List of Traditional Preferred Stocks

Traditional preferred stocks are the original form of the security: perpetual, with no maturity date, paying a fixed quarterly dividend and generally callable at the $25 liquidation preference about five years after issue. This list covers the traditional preferreds QuantumOnline tracks, excluding trust preferreds and exchange-traded debt, which are structured differently and taxed differently.

For most individual investors this is the preferred-stock list that matters, because these are the issues that normally pay qualified dividends taxed at the lower rate rather than interest taxed as ordinary income.

What makes a preferred "traditional"

A traditional preferred is issued directly by the operating company or its REIT, and it is genuine equity on the balance sheet. There is no intermediate financing trust and no underlying debenture. That direct issuance is what makes the distribution a dividend rather than interest — and that, in turn, is what usually makes it eligible for qualified-dividend tax treatment.

Trust preferreds, by contrast, are issued by a trust that holds the parent company's junior subordinated debt. The trust passes through interest, which is taxed as ordinary income. Same $25 price, same quarterly payment, materially different after-tax result.

The perpetual structure

Having no maturity date cuts both ways. There is no date on which the issuer must return your $25, so if you buy at $25 and rates rise, there is no pull-to-par to rescue the price — the security can trade below issue price indefinitely. Long-duration perpetual preferreds are among the most rate-sensitive instruments an individual investor can hold.

In exchange, you receive an income stream with no reinvestment date. If rates fall, a perpetual preferred bought at a good yield keeps paying that yield until the issuer chooses to call it.

REIT preferreds are the main tax exception

Preferred stock issued by a real estate investment trust generally does not qualify for the 15% or 20% qualified-dividend rate, because REITs do not pay corporate income tax on distributed earnings. REIT preferred distributions are normally taxed as ordinary income.

This matters when comparing yields. A 7% REIT preferred and a 7% industrial preferred can produce noticeably different after-tax income. The list of preferreds eligible for the 15% tax rate isolates the issues we believe qualify.

About this data

QuantumOnline has tracked exchange-traded income securities since 1997. Every security in this list is researched and maintained by hand from the issuer's prospectus and SEC filings, not scraped from a vendor feed. Where a figure is unavailable we show "n.a." rather than guessing.

Information is believed to be accurate but is not guaranteed, and nothing here is a recommendation to buy or sell. Always confirm terms against the issuer's prospectus before investing.
