List of Preferred Stocks

This is a complete list of the preferred stocks QuantumOnline tracks, covering traditional preferreds, trust preferreds and convertible preferreds on the NYSE, NYSE American, Nasdaq and the OTC markets. It is the widest preferred-stock view on the site; the narrower lists below split it by type.

A preferred stock is a hybrid. Like a bond it pays a fixed distribution set at issue and does not participate in the company's growth. Like equity it sits below every lender in the capital structure and usually has no maturity date. That combination is why preferreds typically yield more than the same issuer's senior debt and less than its common stock returns in a good year.

What preferred shareholders actually get

A preferred stock entitles you to a stated dividend before common shareholders receive anything, and to a fixed liquidation preference — almost always $25 per share — ahead of common holders if the company is wound up. What it does not give you is a maturity date on which the issuer must repay you. Most preferreds are perpetual, so the only routine ways to get your $25 back are to sell at market or to have the issuer call the security.

Voting rights are usually absent. Many issues do grant preferred holders the right to elect one or two directors if the dividend is missed for a set number of periods, which is the main structural protection in the security.

Cumulative versus non-cumulative

This is the single most important distinction on the list. If a cumulative preferred misses a dividend, the missed payments accrue and must be paid in full before common shareholders receive a cent. If a non-cumulative preferred misses a dividend, that payment is simply gone.

Bank preferreds are overwhelmingly non-cumulative, because banking regulators will not give cumulative issues the same regulatory capital treatment. That is a deliberate trade: the investor gives up the accrual protection and is compensated with a higher coupon.

Call risk is the defining risk

Most preferreds become callable at $25 roughly five years after issue. This creates an asymmetry that catches new investors out. If rates fall, the issuer refinances and calls the security away at $25 — so your upside above par is capped. If rates rise, the issuer happily leaves it outstanding and the price falls with no maturity date to pull it back toward par.

The practical consequence: paying well above $25 for a preferred that is already callable can lock in a loss, because the issuer may redeem it at $25 at any time. Always check the call date and call price, both of which are on every security's detail page.

About this data

QuantumOnline has tracked exchange-traded income securities since 1997. Every security in this list is researched and maintained by hand from the issuer's prospectus and SEC filings, not scraped from a vendor feed. Where a figure is unavailable we show "n.a." rather than guessing.

Information is believed to be accurate but is not guaranteed, and nothing here is a recommendation to buy or sell. Always confirm terms against the issuer's prospectus before investing.
